Marshal Kim il Sung

Founder of The Korean People's Revolutionary Army and political leader of communist North Korea and the Worker's Party of Korea. Developed a close relationship between North Korea and China.

North Communist General who successfully structured Northern Communist forces and Chinese forces into an effective force against The UN Command.

Chinese General and leader of the Chinese 'volunteer' forces during the Korean War.

Syngman Rhee

President of The Republic of Korea from 1948. A strong-minded, and fiercely anti-communist politician, who opposed peace with the North as he saw this as 'appeasement'.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

P US General and 34th President of the USA from 1952 to 1960. Supreme Commander of NATO from 1950 - 1952. His presidency was dominated by American attempts to contain communism and prevent its expansion beyond the USSR, The People's Republic of China and their satellites.

 

Harry S. Truman

33rd President to the USA from 1945 on the death of F.D. Roosevelt until he retired in 1952. Was responsible for establishing US support of The Berlin Airlift (1949), US involvement in NATO and US involvement in Korea (1950). He dismissed General MacArthur in 1951, and later criticised President Eisenhower's administration.

 

General Douglas MacArthur

US General, with numerous decorations for bravery, and a long record of successful command in both world wars. Was the commander of the forces, which accepted the Japanese surrender in 1945 and introduced reforms in Japan. In 1950 was made Commander of US forces sent to support the South Korean Army. Led his forces initial retreat, then advance far into North Korea. He demanded that he be allowed to blockade Chinese ports, bomb Chinese bases in Manchuria and use Chinese Nationalist military support from Formosa (Taiwan). This led to his dismissal by President Truman who thought such aggression would lead to an escalation of the conflict and possibly to nuclear war.

 

General Matthew Ridgeway

US Commander of the American 8th Army in United Nations campaign in Korea 1950. Took over from General Douglas MacArthur in 1951 as Commander-in-Chief of the UN forces.

 

General James (Alward) Van Fleet

US Commander, who had seniority after the removal of General MacArthur by President Truman. Served in Korea 1951-1953 as commander of the US 8th Army. Retired in 1953, but recalled in 1961-62 to train US Army guerrilla fighters.
