25 June North Korean forces attack South Korean forces to the south of the 38th Parallel
27 June American military support for the South is approved by Harry S. Truman, President of the USA.
29 June The North Korean army seizes Seoul the capital of the South. The British Government authorises Royal Navy support for South Korea.
30 June The US authorises its military to be deployed in Korea as part of a United Nations force to protect the South. The US Navy plans a sea-borne blockade of the North.
1 July US Combat troops arrive in Korea under the command of Major-General William F. Dean.
4 July The first engagement between US forces and the North Korean army takes place at Osan. The US retreat.
7 July General Douglas MacArthur of the US Army is appointed Supreme Commander of the UN Forces.
15 July North Korean forces cross the Kum River.
21 July United States UN forces withdraw from Taejon. General Dean is reported missing in action.
1 August The Soviet boycott of the UN Security Council ends as Yakov Malik takes over its presidency.
8 August The North Korean Army reaches the Naktong River.
15 August United Nations troops hold back North Korean advances at the Naktong River.
29 August British forces arrive from Hong Kong, including the 27th Brigade of the British Army.
3 September North Korean forces approach Taeju.
7 September General Walker announces that "our lines will hold".
15 September The US 10 th Corps launch a sea borne assault on Inchon. US forces break out of Pusan and advance northwards through South Korea.
19 September North Korean forces fall back. Seoul is enclosed. Filipino forces land in the South as part of the UN force.
26 September UN forces retake Seoul.
29 September South Korean President Syngman Rhee and General MacArthur re-enter Seoul..
1 October South Korean forces advance over the 38th Parallel into the North.
7 October The UN resolves that "all appropriate steps be taken to ensure conditions of stability throughout Korea". US forces advance over the 38th Parallel.
8 October Chinese leader Mao Tse Tung secretly allows Chinese 'volunteers' to resist what the Chinese see as US imperialism.
18 October Southern troops occupy Hamhung and Hungnam.
25 October Chinese forces engage South Korean forces south of the Yalu River.
27 -29 October Chinese forces end the US/UN advance.
30 October The South Korean 6th Division is over-run by Chinese forces at Yongdu.
1 November The first Chinese MiG fighters are seen in action in air battles over the Yalu River.
6 November General MacArthur claims publicly that the Chinese are guilty of "using unlawful aggression".
8 November Air battles take place over Sinuiji.
12 November The US reinforces its commitment in Korea with the arrival of the 3rd US Army Division.
16 November US President Truman declares that he is not intending that US forces cross into China.
24 November A Chinese 'Special Delegation' is sent to the UN Security Council to initiate diplomatic moves for peace.
General MacArthur advances his forces towards China.
25 November As a goodwill gesture Chinese forces release 57 US prisoners of war.
26 November Chinese forces stage a successful counter attack against UN forces and halt their advance.
1 December UN forces are pulled back gradually as Chinese and North Korean Army units advance.
5 December The North Korean capital is evacuated of UN and US forces.
9 December Wonsan is evacuated by ships of the US Navy.
11 December UN and South Korean forces withdraw from Hungnam.
17 December US President Truman declares a state of national emergency as UN troops fall back.
22 December The People's Republic of China rejects the offer of a ceasefire in Korea as there is no offer to pull all UN and foreign troops from North Korea and China.
23 December US General Walker is killed in a jeep crash.
25 December Chinese and North Korean forces re-cross the 38th Parallel.
27 December US Lt. General Ridgeway takes command of UN forces in Korea.
