4 January Seoul is evacuated by UN forces.
7 January Communist troops enter Wonju, and are expected to continue their advance.
8 - 15 January Communist advances slow, and then are halted.
13 January United states delegates within the UN vote for a ceasefire, and offer proposals to the North.
17 January North Korea rejects the UN deal based on Chinese advice.
1 February The UN Security Council declares that China is engaged in an aggressive action.
10 February UN troops recapture Inchon and Kimpo
21 February UN 'Operation Killer' is launched.
7 March UN 'Operation Ripper' is launched.
13 March Chinese forces are edged back and UN forces slowly move north.
15 March The southern capital, Seoul, is retaken by the UN
21 March The Chunchon area is 'liberated'.
22 March UN forces reach the 38th Parallel.
3 April UN forces cross into North Korea.
5 April General MacArthur makes public a letter he has written criticising US President Truman's conduct of the war.
11 April Truman relieves MacArthur of his command, and appoints General Ridgeway as Commander of the UN forces.
19 April MacArthur criticises Truman in front of a US Congress hearing.
22 April The Chinese and North Koreans begin a new campaign and edge forward.
25 April The Battle of the Imjin River begins, causing UN troops to fall back 18-20 miles.
1 May Chinese and North Koreans again advance near to Seoul.
16 May The North forces retreat slightly above Seoul.
28 May The UN retakes Hwachon and Inje.
June US Secretary of State Acheson expresses a willingness to 'negotiate a ceasefire near the 38th Parallel'.
23 June USSR's UN Ambassador Malik calls for a ceasefire.
29 June UN/US General Ridgeway offers to begin negotiations.
1 July Kim Il Sung, President of North Korea and the Chinese commander Peng Te Huai agree to ceasefire talks.
10 July Negotiations for a ceasefire begin at Kaesong.
26 July Northern Korea and China agree an agenda for the ceasefire negotiations with the UN
23 August China alleges that UN forces have violated a neutral zone agreement, and ceasefire talks are suspended.
25 October Ceasefire discussions resume.
13 November The US proposes freezing the border at its current point as long as all other issues can be resolved in 30 days. In the interim they continue military action.
27 November The US deadline expires, and peace proposals are abandoned.
