Activity
2: Legitimate action?
The
Korean War saw fierce fighting, great bravery
and many sacrifices, as well as great cruelty
and injustice. Both the Communist forces and the
American /United Nations military accused their
opponents of war crimes. To this day the governments
of Korea hold on record 61 documented accusations
of war crimes against the United States Army.
The United States has only accepted one case as
proven.
This
activity provides you with the opportunity to
think about what kind of behaviour is permissible
by military forces during wartime. Remember that
your interpretation may vary from that of others
- this is acceptable, as long as you can justify
your opinion.
The
following questions may help you think about what
is or is not acceptable behaviour in a war.
|
Task
Divide
a sheet of paper into two columns.
In
the left column list what you think is acceptable
as miltary action for wartime. For example
the bombing of miltary targets may be acceptable
to most people.
In
the right column list any things which you
think are not acceptable activities during
a war. For example the torture of civilians
may be considered as unacceptable.
