Activity
3: Similarity and difference
This
image is a communist painting of prisoners being
released by liberating forces. It is an artist's
impression. Artists can create very accurate representations
of the past. They can also create materials which
are based on limited facts, or memory or imagination.
For these reasons an historian has to be careful
when dealing with artistic reconstructions of
past events.
Task
Look
carefully at the image and the following questions
and then discuss your answers with another person.
 |
What
is meant by the terms:
1. 'artistic
licence'? 2.
'reconstruction'? 3.
'realism'? |
 |
Do
you think that the scene depicted actually
happened in exactly this way? Explain your
viewpoint. |
 |
Does
the fact that this is an artist's impression
affect its value as an historical source?
