Introduction
The end of
the Korean War was only achieved after long and complicated
negotiations over the space of several years. During
the various stages of the peace discussions the fighting
still continued.
Diplomatic
attempts to begin peace talks were often frustrated
by minor disagreements between the two sides, often
over the protocol for the details of the structure of
the peace negotiations.
When the
discussions began they were long-winded and slow.
Every aspect
of the proposed peace settlement was reported back to
the national governments of the participants and to
the United Nations. At several points negotiations broke
down, and many weeks passed by before the sides could
be brought back together for further discussion.
Eventually
a peace treaty was agreed, and was signed by Korean
General Nam Il on behalf of the North Korean and Chinese
governments and Lieutenant General Harrison of the USA
and UN delegation.
