Activity 1: The peace process

The POW question was one of the most difficult in the negotiations. Photos show the glaring contrast.

Image 2: Chinese caption

A peaceful life without fear in a POW camp in North Korea.

These images are photographs of Chinese prisoners in UN detention and American prisoners in Chinese and Korean detention. One of the main arguments that prevented the progress of peace talks was the USA's claim that many of the Korean and Chinese POWs were asking for political asylum, and were refusing to be repatriated (returned) to the North.

BulletTasks

1. Explain what each of the following terms means:

Bullet Prisoner of War Bullet Propaganda
Bullet Repatriation Bullet Morale

2. If the second image were used, in 1951, by an American newspaper write a suitable caption to go with the image.

3. List all of the reasons that you can to explain why the Communist governments had denied that some of their troops wished to be returned home, and why the USA felt that the refusal of some prisoners to accept voluntary repatriation was a useful story.
