Warren Hastings was the company's first Governor General of India. He worked hard to encourage company servants to absorb and learn about Indian cultures. He also waged wars against rulers outside India, which he paid for with money from Indian Nawabs (regional kings). This got him into a lot of trouble when he returned to England, and he was tried in Westminster Hall.
